How long until your overwhelmed or tired of poultry

I sometimes will start getting overwhelmed/tired of them at least once year. I usually need a vacation, but hey, who doesn't need a vacation from something they do every day? Then after the vacation, I'm all good with them again.

What's a vacation? Many of us don't take them.

I'm dreading our first chicken-keeping winter - short days, wetter ground, colder temps, just plain less fun to be outside. (I like to borrow trouble. ) I feel like summer is a sort of free pass, except for dealing with the heat.
We have a new walk-in, larger coop coming in October, which will help a lot. But, it's costing an arm and leg, so those bossy little girls better stay as entertaining as they are now!

I remember my chicken-winter-dread days.
I got creative in many ways. I made a party out of it and it is "my winter exercise" I need it and I enjoy it very much.
In the winter I always like to bundle up colorfully and go into the barn. I hung a do-da-day on the wall above the entrance, hay the birds up, clean up, keeping it tidy and keep feeders full (always) in the winter. I like to see my chickens bask in fresh hay, their eyes tell it all. I'll even throw in a branch I have chained sawed from a fallen tree, they love it. It changes the boring of winter.
I buy seven five gallon buckets with lids (before they are gone from the shelves). September is the best time to collect goodies for my flock, because I know it is going to be below freezing eventually. I fill those suckers up with water in the house and keep them there. I make sure I have at least six 250w bulbs before the cold weather hits (another hard item to purchase) once it is super cold outside. It always makes me feel good to know my birds are safe, warm and happy in the winter. I get a lot of eggs in return. Buy yourself a very good pair of coveralls and flat boots too!
It makes the job easier (washing).

It depends on how stable my housing situation. And there can be a myriad of factors for lots of people. The longest I’ve ever lived anywhere as an adult was 4 years in Southern California, and chickens were fun and seemed very easy in such a mild climate. Throw a few more kids in the mix, a coop that is farther away and an actual cold winter, and I’m finding it to be much more work in Northern Nee Mexico…I’m in my second year with our new set up, on the path to homeschooling because of Covid and I am findingit to be less fun, much more expensive. I also hoped my kids would help me out more. I need some tricks up my sleeve!
Do people really drink rum with their chickens? Tequila seems to be more appropriate, idk.

Hi, Celeste. "With rum" is a standard option on all polls around here. Whereabouts in Northern New Mexico are you? I lived for about 30 years very near to Aztec, know where that's at? I'm in SE MO now, though. Welcome to the forum!

Not sure. I have had my own flock for only a year. I was tasked with tending the chickens when I was 10-13. I enjoyed caring for them then and now at 35. I live in Wisconsin and we get quite a bit of snow here in the winter so it's a lot of work tending to them during our very long winter months... But they bring quite a bit of joy and simplicity to my life! I'd rather shovel chicken poo or process a chicken than sit at my desk and do frontend development!

We've made it a year and in some aspects its a chore( cleaning...who likes to clean). But in my opinion, this hobby is easier than dealing with my 3 dogs! Make sure they have food and water and they're good! We do pay attention to then, not like we ignore them but I think they're far easier than a dog.

Chickens are so much easier than the cattle we've had, the horses we still have, and the dogs and cats! Less expensive, too.

Even the most demanding of birds, my African Grey parrot, is less work than a dog or cat. And, she tells me what to do, but chickens will tell you to feed them just like any pet will! This guy is a real lap chicken boy, now he is with a friend, @BlueBaby 's place, I just couldn't eat him!

His name is George now. All 3 of the Dorking's have settled in good now.
