How long will it take to heal?

My 3 month old Polish Chick escaped out of our yard and spent a harried day and night lost in our woods. The next day I found her in the woods. Her back was torn open leaving a three wounds, one of which was two inch wound with a puncture that exposed her kidney. I washed her with warm water, poured hydrogen peroxide onto her back, alternating the next day with idoine, Shriners and hydrogen peroxide. I keep the wounds covered with neosporin. I did not think she’d make it. I took her into the house that first night. Today however she is recovering. The green bruising is clearing up and the missing flesh is closing up. Her feathers are beginning to come back. My question is how long before the 5 inch wide bared back feathers will come back and I can let her rejoin her peeps?

Wow that sounds like a miracle. Good job! I wouldn't let her back out until all traces of the wound are gone, because some of her flock mates might peck at it. With a wound like that, she needs some time for R & R. Keep doing what you're doing! She might have some shock going on still too, if I were her, I would! Chickens tend to try to hide symptoms of illness or injury, so do be careful. I don't know how long til her feathers grow back. How long have you been treating her? I've read (and it's true) that Polish have a harder time than other breeds in dealing with predators, because they can't see because of their head mops. :( We lost our little white crested black Polish pullet to some predator at the beginning of March. They are so cute.

Thank you. We found her and began recovery on Friday evening so three nights ago. She was so happy to see me, she wanted me to hold her. Her fellow escape artists were crying for her. She is very loved but I think I’ll take your advice.

I had a chicken get severely pecked down to the bone on the back of her head. It took about 7 months or so for the quarter sized hole to grow skin and close over. She never regrew feathers until she molted, she still has a small bald spot to this day, 3 years later. So it is hard to say how long, but it could be awhile. We sprayed her with blue kote every night for about 10 months. The others did not peck her because of the color.
