I have 9 chicks in this cage, they will all be standard size hens. The cage is 2.25 x 3.5. How long can I feasibly keep them in here? They are now about 1.5 weeks old. The temps outside will be mid 70s to mid 40s this week so hoping the warming trends up soon. I have a very large coop that we are in the process of cleaning and repainting so it’s not quite ready to use.

I'm trying to relate this to what I've done in my brooders instead of going by square footage some people use. I've kept 28 chicks in a 3' x 5' brooder until they were 5 weeks old. They were getting pretty tight. That was about 0.54 sq ft per chick. Your 9 chicks and that size brooder gives 0.875 square feet per chick. I think you'd be good until they are about 6 weeks old.

I've had chicks 5-1/2 weeks old go through temperatures in the mid 20's Fahrenheit without supplemental heat. You should be OK for 9 chicks with that brooder but it might start to get tight.

I'd say roughly 4 weeks, mostly because they start getting restless and start playing more roughly. It'd probably help if you can start letting them out into a small outdoor enclosure for increasing periods of time when weather is agreeable (or if the run is complete, that would work too, or a sectioned off portion of the run) so they can work out some of their energy during the day.

We had 20 in 6 ft stock-tank, but shortly after they were almost fully feathered, it was time to move them to the coop and run. We moved the heater down there with them because the weather was still a little chilly at night. They kind of let you know when they are ready for more space. They start to get annoyed with each other if they don't have enough space.
