How many boys do I have??

The barred Rocks look like pullets to me. The black bands are pretty wide on all of them. It's the skin at the base of the comb 'blushing' that is making it seem like the combs are pink. The combs themselves are still very yellow. If the Welsummer starts to get solid black feathers on the chest, then it is without a doubt male.

That's interesting! I had read that large black bands are normally girls, but then I have all black chicks with little yellow combs that are clearly girls. And they look so different to ones I think are boys. I have got to say that when there is a loud noise they ALL dart, lol no one stands proud. However to look at them all together two stand out a little more as their heads seem bigger and they stand more prouder when I intrude into their space. ( if that makes sense) so I guessed these two were defo boys. I'm hoping only the welsummer is a boy, as I lost my roo just before these hatched. He was an old boy

I have 6 barred Rocks. My lightest one had the smallest comb. My darkest had the biggest comb. They all turned out to be pullets. There can be a wide variation in hatchery sourced birds. Here's a pic to show you how different their feathering was.

It's so hard to tell. I just need to make some room and down size my boys that I have as I don't want them but would never destroy one.
I will be keeping one of the rock boys though

Well I had planned on selling the ones I presumed were boys but now I don't think I will just yet. At what age will they show for sure what they are? I don't mind having a girl that turns out To be a boy, but I don't want to sell any I think are boys and they would have been girls. I don't think I will actually sell any roos and they aren't very sellable, they will end up being a freebie I think.

The rules about the black bars vs the white bars only works on pure bred birds. Since these are crosses, those rules don't apply.

Which parent was the Welsummer, father or mother?

Edit--reading further, it sounds like the Welsummer was the rooster and the barred Rocks were the mommas? In that case, you have sex linked chicks. All the barred birds are male, all the non-barred birds are female. that's on the crosses only, of course, not your pure Wellie.

Hi I'm guessing my barred Plymouth rocks x welsummers are mostly boys but just want to check. Also the welsummer amongst them I'm sure is a boy. Any help would be great, hard to take great pictures.

Are you saying most of the chicks are crosses? If so, which breed was the roo and hen? Because if it was welsumer roo over a barred rock hen then that is a sex linked cross- all boys barred, all girls not barred.

Thought to ask as you seemed to be saying these are crosses and there are pictures of non-barred black girls....

the welsumer is a boy, due to the black coming onto the breast.
