That would be the "midwife" and "doula" chickens, there to coach the one laying. Then they switch! Ha ha ha!

I wish I'd had the camera with me. Mine don't squeeze into the nest boxes together (that I've seen, anyway) but they love a good, community dust bath. I've seen as many as 5 pullets and a cockerel in a divot together -- if they weren't mostly different colors, it would be hard to tell where one chicken ends and another begins.

I must say though, you have some very roomy nest boxes.

I have had chickens and my Muscovy ducks sitting together in a 12" x 12" box. But then again we are in Massachusetts and anything goes here!
