How many chickens have you lost due to the winter so far?

DW and I have lost 2 geese and 4 chickens. We have had a lot of the roos lose their comb tips and 1 goose has lost part of his feet due to frostbite. The geese have shelter to go into and the chickens are divided into two coops. Bantams in an insulated 8 by 8 and the standards are in a un-insulated 8 by 24 coop. We are in the process of insulating the bigger coop right now.

This winter has been down to -35 for about a week straight at night and a balmy -5 during the days. For the temps we had, I guess we didn't do too bad compared to our neighbors. They have had losses about double to ours.

I think my duck died from getting into the water buckets to much and not drying off since the floor was getting wet. I went into the area to start shoveling and found him dead. The weirdest part is that he died on the nicest day we had so far. Sad that he died when it is almost spring. I don't know why the cochin died. It was still dry then and he roosted unlike some of the others that like sleeping on the floor. We have ours in an old sileage that was most of the way knocked down except about 6 foot and has a tin roof on it. The door is a thick wire that opens up into the barn area with our cows. We have a light on all the time for them but have it so it is blocked on one side so they can have some roosting areas darker. We did eat a couple of our turkeys this winter. Even though I lost 2 to the winter I'd rather it be from the winter than the dog injurying them like she did the first year I had chickens. She killed about 6 and injuried a lot of others within less than an hour. I don't know how they ended up on the other sides of the fences in that time with as many as she got a hold of. Some of my roos have frost bite on their combs. Not to bad though.

None-no heat in coop and no insulation. I've been fortunate and thankful
