I had my 8 3 week old chicks outside yesterday while baby was down for a nap. When she woke up, I went inside to get her, change clothes/diaper and I heard a commotion outside.

Ran outside to find two chicks in the crate and 6 chicks completely gone. Searched high and low and only found two more wedged behind a planter on the deck. While searching I heard two hawks calling from nearby. They must have been silently watching while I was outside. I was inside for 10 minutes tops

.

Four are still missing. There are lots of places they could have hidden. Under the deck/porch, under the car, under the shed, tall grass on the hillside, lots of shrubbery, forest.

Even brought the dog out to try to find them... he was pretty useless.

I guess if it were two hawks they could have grabbed one per foot.

Its possible they did, keep looking though because chickens hid when they see hawks, even after there gone.

Ending up finding 3 more, on deep under the front porch and two more hiding underneath leaf litter. Along the house foundation under part of the deck... Still one missing though :-/

It's good you found some of them. Are there any feathers scattered around where they could've been attacked?

No trace. There is an area under the deck/porch that is inaccessible to us about 5 feet from one that we found... Possible it is under there? How long will it stay hidden if it is still alive. When would it venture out?

No idea when it would come out. Maybe leave a little bit of food in a bowl under where it is and maybe it'll come out... But I agree with the flashlight idea. X2

We did, but there is an old concrete step that is a foot or so from the house that we can't see the other side of. It's possible to get a camera on a stick, maybe we will try that.
