How many chicks will you hatch in 2026?

I try to sell most of them, but this coming hatch I will be keeping some to replace some of my older breeders. What do you do with your chicks?
We keep some for replacement hens, and some go to a friend. Boys typically go to the freezer.

Nice! Lucky friend :) I don't keep boys long enough to be slaughtered. If I have a large batch I can usually always find someone to buy the lot to raise out for meat. I've done my own before but decided it's really not worth it to go through that process. It's cool that you do it though.

How are all the chick plans coming along? We are almost 1/6th the way through the year! Do you have 1/6th of your planned chicks yet? :lau
I have a broody due to hatch I think three or four chicks this Sunday. Just random eggs from my flock, so cross breeds and possibly one Light Sussex.

One person I'll be getting hatching eggs from is starting to pen his breeding groups together, and a couple of other breeders have just started setting eggs for their own hatches and expect to have eggs available for other people fairly soon.

The cockerel I hope to use for sex links here is just beginning to learn some manners. No rush there since I don't have a pen ready yet that I'd be happy using for that many birds and that much time.

21/350

It's a slow start, but will be picking up very soon.

There are two batches currently in the incubators, but each is only about half full. Soon, they'll both be full all the time.

Same! But I'm pretty sure all of them but the Production Blue have plans. So 5 x ???

Although since I've decided to make my life easier & just let whoever wants to sit do so this year since we now have a rooster, and have an actual plan in place for all the resulting chicks, they may all decide that it's just not fun that way & not go broody. Only time will tell.
And so it begins!
Have one broody. Been sitting on 9 eggs for 8 days now. I'll candle them in a couple days and see how many are viable. 🙏
She's one of the chicks from last year: Splash Orpington/Cochin cross (most likely). She's a big, beautiful girl, but my poorest layer. So if I was only going to allow one to stay broody & be allowed to sit & hatch eggs, she's the best one to let do so. I left eggs from all the others to see how they turn out, but pulled the one she laid. Made up the extra from my Production Blue as she's the best layer I have & has also yet to go broody.
So now I'm praying Cookie is able to hatch some of those eggs & that she's a good momma! 🙏
