How many chicks?

We're just starting in this whole raising chicks thing. How many chicks did you all start out with for a backyard/small farm? We are starting with 25, which may be over-doing it just a little, lol.

We only started with 3! LOL

But over the years of raising chickens, I've learned one thing...

Well I started raising chicks in March of this year. And I started with 6. I originally only wanted 3 but the minimuim order was 6. 25 is a good number but a lot of times you get chicken addiction and want more. So you could start with a smaller number and that way you dont end up with like 200 chickens! But that is just my opinion.

I have had to completely restrain myself the last 2 weekends at Tractor Supply store and NOT buy *just a few* chicks to bring home while waiting for ours to come in the mail ...

Haha... Um, I wanted 10-12. Then I decided 12-15. Then 20-25. Somewhere along the lines I totally skipped the 20-25 and had 37 all of a sudden! Then, since I got straight run and I knew about half were roos, I got more and I now have 61 (I gave 2 young roos away to a friend). Plus, I have 25 on order from Privett. I know for sure I have 8 roos, 24 I don't know about and 10 of the pending order from Privett will be unknown. So, I am thinking about 30 of my soon to be 86 chicks are freezer bound. That leaves me with about 55. My final number was 50 - my "coop" can hold 90... Teheheheee!

I started with 30.... ok, well, I ordered 30, and when they came in, the hatchery had thrown in some extra cockerels (of the breeds I ordered). So, the guy who owns the store gave them to me... I think there were 4-5 extra... then one of the chicks died, so I bought 4 more... it IS addicting!!! So, I think I have 37 now... if I could get more I would, but I don't have any more room in the brooder... as it is, I am going to have to get a couple more stock tanks from my folks in a week or so 'cause they are going to outgrow the current one soon!!! Oh, and all but 2 cockerels will be going to freezer camp late summer...

I started with 6, about 4 years ago...now I have 48!

I ordered 40 last year, split the order with a couple friends. Now have 28 and another 75 to be delivered next week. Now if the 'officials' ask, I have 25.

I suffer from chicken math (I'll use this in court)

I started out with just wanting 5-6 and then saw all the different little fuzzbutts and am up to 24 and hope to be able to stop myself aroud the 30 mark! LOL
