i've been laughing myself sick about how my degree had NOTHING to do with my career - at all. i did some fast talking when i started in high tech to get in.... but eh... nothing to do with it at all.

Hello all I am a social worker (LCSW) working in my field of study, doing Foster care and mental health treatment ( my chickens are my mental health treatment)
I have a BS in ele education with a minor in Art. I attended:
University of Maine at Fort Kent
University of Utah SLC
University of Maine Orono

I have my Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. I graduated in 2007 from Cedar Crest College in Allentown, PA. I currently work in my field as a Psychiatric RN. Going back to school was one of the best things I've ever done in my life. LOVE MY JOB!

Wanted to go to school again to work on my Master's Degree in Nursing, but, I'm very happy with my job now! Why ruin a good thing?

Oooh! Do you do any isotope ratio mass spec work?

I used oxygen and hydrogen isotope data for my undergrad thesis

Yikes! We try to never talk badly about the mass specs, they all seem to have devious personalities! Always break when you need that one last sample!

I use deuterium and O-18 as a biomarker to measure metabolism. I will have a chapter coming out in the Encyclopedia of Mass Spec Volume 5 on use of stable isotopes in vivo.

By the way, we are analyzing samples for UCLA and have lots of data on in vivo background enrichments from subjects from the area. Don't know if that would be of interest to your students, PM me if so.

Sorry for the thread stealing and extreme nerd shop talk everyone!

Wow! We sure have alot of well educated chicken farmers.

Bachelor of Arts; Teaching French, Central Washington University

Exchange student (during B.A.): Universite de Savoie, Chambery, France, studied their equivalent of ESL at the master's level b/c was bored at the undergrad level

Master of Education; Agency Counseling: University of Puget Sound

9-month executive business certificate: a large university that is also my employer. Of interest: Edgar Martinez was in my program of 35 students and he's a very nice guy.

I thought I would be a French teacher or professor. After studying abroad, I realized that helping others do the same was what I wanted to do as a career. To that end, I earned my M.Ed. while working at UPS (hooray for no grad school loans). My job entails creating co-curricular international experiences for higher education students. I love it. It's fun, dynamic, and my students are interesting people.

My current employer sponsored me for the business certificate, which was great b/c I had no formal business training. It taught me:
a) a lot about business
b) that I don't like business.

ETA: When you work for a university, you can't swing a dead cat and not hit about 7 people who have a string of letters after their names. There's a real problem with degree deflation when you're a staff member: many hiring managers require a 4-year degree and prefer a master's level program... for an entry level job. Even though I've got 2 degrees and a string of educational experiences, I often forget that in the "real world" it's not nearly so common.
