I'm thinking of putting some sort of colored marker in the top of the nest boxes to see who's marked and who isn't. We're getting five eggs one day and eleven the next.
I wouldn't bet the farm on that method. I've had girls sit in a nest for a long time, then leave and not even lay an egg that day. The only way I know for SURE you can know:
- Watch every egg get laid
- Put food coloring in their vent. Not sure how well that works if they poop at some point before they lay.
The 5/11 pattern doesn't seem all that odd. They are not going to lay every day and besides all potentially being on a different pattern, a given bird's pattern can change. Some may lay every other day, some two days on one off, some one on, two off, others 10 on 1 off then 6 on 2 off. The pattern in my flock is to NOT have a pattern. I'm still waiting for one of Gifa's birds to come over and give my girls some tips on punctuality.
I would (and do) look more at the number of eggs every 2 days, how many a week, how many days to get a dozen, that sort of thing. With the longer daylight hours I expect those numbers to improve and it has this month.
I think Blackie must have thrown Rusty off the nest, done her thing, then let Rusty go back and finish!!!
One of my EEs did that, the difference being the girl she tossed was brooding the pine shavings, not laying eggs. Maybe they would be less picky if you put a fake egg in each nest?? The old "if it is good enough for another chicken, it is good enough for me" trick
(Tuesday) 6 eggs.
(Wednesday) 9 eggs. One was laid overnight into Wednesday (good thing they lay hard shell and have pine shavings under them). My first "2 eggs from one chicken" day
The one that laid overnight laid a larger egg Wednesday that looked a bit like a balloon that had deflated and got a bit wrinkly.
