How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

Put vasaline (petroleum jelly) on his comb and wattles and it will protect them from the cold. Its worked on my cockerel.

Thanks joelharris but I live WAY out of town and no store close and all I have is Vick's salve. Don't know if that would be advisable or not....??

We just started with 4 Isa Browns. They are laying around 14-18 eggs a week (for all of them). I've been wondering if we need to get a few more. Our pen is big enough to hold more but probably need to think about this. Do you let your's our to pick around the yard? I have been letting mind out for about an hr each day.

Until yesterday night, I've left the chicken door open so they can go out into the chicken run each day. I have a 25' x 50' area fenced off for them. I provide them with hay to cover the ice and snow in the yard. Most of the time they go out and then sit under the coop until night.

Yesterday they never left the coop, even though the door was open and the weather had warmed up to 30 degrees. For the next 3 days, we are expecting a high of -10 with windchills as low as -52. So, I shut them in the coop. I will open them back up Wednesday morning.

I think it's good for them to get out in the yard, it keeps them busy and less apt to pick on each other.

1 out of 3. One egg five days in a row with sub zero temp all day and -20s at night. They are awesome. Tough buggers. I love my chickens such neat critters.

I have two hens laying but they haven't laid since Thursday not sure why other than it got really cold. My buff Orpington hen quit layingthe end of November but have been told she should s art laying come spring
