How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

2/10... They miss me and are on strike til I am able to walk back out there

4/10... If that can now just be the low amount I'll be ok til the pullets start laying in March or April..

Had one of my older hens that has kept going back and setting on the nest off and on today, she is a sexlink so I know she aint thinking broody but she is the one that keeps giving me fart eggs once or twice a week and it takes her all day to lay it.. I keep hoping she still has some eggs in her otherwise she is stew meat later this month.. My white hen (not sure of the name but also a sexlink) has quit completely since last summer.

WTHeck is a fart egg????

It is a glob of albumen that enters the shell gland and gets it's own shell but has no yolk. It is quite small. For a LF it is about the size of an acorn.

Wow!!! Thanks for the quick answer.... Always learning something new. My girls were 18wks last Friday when they produced their first two eggs. They've given me 11eggs in their first 8 days of production but half of them are quite small.... I wonder should I expect some false starts with the new little eggs??

LOL, my neighbors face was priceless when he asked how many we had... I honestly didn't know.. It was my husband who took the time to go out and do a head count...For me, I just didn't care

Gonna have to call my feed store when they start laying good, store credit would be soooo usefull!! and I will keep that in mind about Maran eggs

I never know how many I have.

I guess if I had a set flock in one building, no young ones coming up and no raccoons eating them, it would be easier to keep track.
I sometimes have as many as 9 flocks (albeit small, not over 12 in each) and eggs hatching. I have to ponder each flock, think about the number in each and add them up. I can usually do that without a headcount but people are really amazed I can't spit out the number.

When fart eggs become prevalent, it means the hen's reproductive tract needs a break. A hen will never lay all her eggs in her lifetime. If you put her on low light and give her a break, she may kick in next summer.
They're unpredictable. That's why I stay away from sexlinks and other egg hybrids.
I like pure breeds who's traits are more like traditional chickens. I have some old hens that take a long winter break. But, being very valuable rare breeds, I know that in another month or two, they'll be laying like gangbusters again.
I agree that one has to determine how long one wants to feed a non-productive bird.

I've rarely gotten a fart egg from a pullet, though possible before their systems get in synch. More likely are double/triple yolks with young birds.
They'll steadily get larger. They'll also lay very well for about 18 months and then take longer and longer breaks every fall/winter. I warn people with chickens for the first time and who are so proud of the prolific production not to be alarmed when that pace isn't maintained for years.

IME fart eggs are towards the end of a laying cycle or when a hen has a hiccup in the reproductive tract, usually from some type of stress.
