You can use either...I like the finer stuff better.
Thanks thats what im going with and when you first introduce the chicks to the brooder are there pine chips on the floor already or do you wait one day so they know where the food is!?!?!
Because im using the smaller size wood shavings will they think its food, should i let them fine the food and then put in the shavings tomorrow!?!?
THANKS

They'll know what their food is...do it all at once. They will peck on the shavings, mine still do and they were born in March and April. If your totally new to chickens as I was there are lots of forums on BYC that are of great help.

This post isn't about eggs but i need help with my brooder!?!?!?!?
Is it ok to use the fine pine shavings from Tractor Supply or do i need to use the flake kind??

I'm getting the chicks tomorrow please help!!!
I have both but nee to know which one to use!!!

THANKS
Some use paper towels or towels, some newspaper, some shavings. Newspaper or other slippery surface they say can cause splayed legs. I used layered paper towels so I could see the poop. Some(and I'm one of them) don't use shavings for the first few days till they find the food. The babies can ingest the shavings (especially the fine ones) and although it doesn't happen often, they can die. I think it's more common with shipped chicks that have been without food. Here's a great link that discusses your question. Good luck with your chicks!

Hi. I am a new chicken mom and the girls just started laying but it's very inconsistent. One day I get 4 and then it's been 1 egg everywhere day or every third day. They are all Amerucanas. Any idea about what's going on?

That happens, I'm on that right now too. 3 of my girls just started laying and waiting on 3 more. It's very random in the beginning.

Ha... That was suppose to say every other day. I feel certain that it is just one hen that's laying right now and she looks slightly different than the other girls so I think she may be part Amerucana and the other part RIR. Maybe that's why she started first?
