How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

Cool picture

11 eggs today!! Yippee!! Also got my first Black Penedesenca egg today and it was a whopper! Extra Large on the egg scale. It's hard to believe that it is her first egg, but I hatched her, and I've been watching & looking for eggs from her. She is the only hen in that coop, so it has to be hers, plus it is much darker than any others that I have. She is from my Easter hatch a long.

It's the 2nd from the back on the right side (the dark brown egg). There are only 10 eggs in the carton because one was thin shelled & I fed it back to the chickens.

The scale says it all: Extra large!

congratulations!

Penedesencas lay one of the darkest eggs in the world. Some lines rival Marans eggs. I'm shooting for that.
There was once a picture of some Penedesenca eggs in a poultry magazine from the UK and the eggs were almost black.

Karen, I highly recommend the following book.

You can get it used for as little as $2.79.
There's a newer edition I have to buy. It hasn't been released yet.

For brooding chicks I like ceramic heat emitters that you can use the same brood fixture but still allow a light and dark period each day.
You can get them from 50-350 watt on ebay. They last longer than glass lamps and if they do break, they don't make a mess.

We only got 4 eggs yesterday. Our hens (we have 6) are starting to slow down with it getting darker earlier and with it starting to get cold.

Does anyone happen to know what would cause a hen to lay a different colored egg? In the photo, the almost whiteish colored egg (on top) was produced by one of our hens yesterday. Normally her eggs are brown in color (shell color). Not sure what would cause this and this is the first we have seen of this!
