I think that breeding Ameraucanas and Marans are a common way to make Olive Eggers. I've also seen Cream Legbars and Welsummers bred together. I'm no expert, but I'd guess an Ameraucana or Easter Egger (usually a pea comb) bred with some brown egg layer. My Olive Egger looks like a Blue Ameraucana. There are several colors of Ameraucanas, including black.
sometimes a lead hen will take the roll so to speak of the cockerel if there isn't one

Yes I'm getting excellent performance, but its because I have a red sex-links type of chicken, bred for high egg laying and they are in their prime at 9 months of age. GCWow you all are getting a nice percentage! I got 4 today. I'm averaging 5/day out of 31 layers. I'm battling ~10 molting, 50% of the flock is 2 years old or older, sub-freezing temps (5 degrees this morning) and almost daily hawk attacks. Lost our roo 6 weeks ago to a very large hawk. The cards are stacked against us.
Hubby went out to the coop the other day and called out "Anyone not laying is an automatic candidate for the soup pot!". I scolded him for scaring them and ran out there to pet and kiss them. UGH! I'm my own worst enemy. I'm way to attached to our food.
