Please keep us posted!@penny1960 bought 9 what? eggs or chickens?
I got 8 eggs today. And have some new chicks! 1 hatched last night, I could hear it chirping when I locked them up last night, but I didn't look incase anyone else was trying to hatch. Today after I finished chipping up some branches (maybe around 6 or 7 PM) I went to check on Momma broody. I saw what looked like part of an egg shell push off to her side. I grabbed it out and it was a chick that had become shrink wrapped! The poor thing was very cold and still. Then I saw another egg on the other side of her. I pulled it out thinking it was an abandoned egg, but it was another shrink wrapped egg. I could hear it chirping. It was much more incased in it's eggshell. I peeled off the shell and giving it about a 30% chance for survival, I put it back under Momma. The first shrink wrapped chick hadn't made any noise or anything and I determined that it had not made it. At lock up I lifted Momma just for a couple of quick seconds to see if the other shrink wrapped baby had died or not. It was still alive as well as 2 fluffy chicks!! Or it was one of the fluffy chicks and another chick had hatchedAnyway, I am happy to report that Momma broody currently has at least 3 living chicks under her as well as some more eggs (6 more eggs I believe). We'll see what the next couple of days bring. I don't plan on letting this particular bird go broody again. She (black sex link, I think) stole the nest from another bird ( a barred rock) after her eggs got tossed. That's twice now that the barred rock has been forced out at the end of the hatch.
