How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

I’ve been kind of scared about slipping-in a newly hatched chicks under a broody after hatching 24 chicks last year and placing 2 of them under a broody hen with 5 eggs hatching under her. She rejected the 2 and injured them and yet took care of her own 5. The 2 survived with leg injury, now 8 months old.
I knew it was a risk, but when all was still good when I left for work I incorrectly assumed it would be clear sailing since it was already daylight. I'm real happy that the chick has survived (at least so far) especially since it looked so dead when I found it!

16 eggs today. On a sad note, the chick I had given the broody the other day, then found near dead, then nursed back to life, was just found dead this evening.:hit

The broody is down to 1 egg. I am pretty sure that she ate the other 4 eggs, so I'm guessing that they weren't developing or may not have been fertile.
I think I am going to have to break her broodiness.

So sad :( some mother hen are not so motherly, my 2 chicks surrogate rejects was never normal after, they can’t hop on roosting bars since their legs were broken, I was just so glad they were able to walk and reach egg laying maturity. To this day they are my low nest dwellers and nest sleepers.
