How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

I got one yesterday and two this morning! 3 hens not laying after molting, 2 of 3 pullets laying. I’m tickled to have any at all this time of year! I’m much relieved to see the pullet who laid the huge egg has laid 2 normal sized ones since that first one.

Alright you guys! I am soooo envious. I have 8 chickens and haven't had an egg for a month now. Maybe one here and there, but nothing substantial. They did go thru 5 of their buds getting dead from predators, snakes taking eggs, and a lot of rain last week, but not an egg. Two are molting, but looking better. How can I jump start these ladies? Suggestions anyone?

I am so happy to report that I got 16 eggs yesterday! We were in the path of the Bear/North Complex fire and my chickens were very traumatized. Their food shed burned down and the coop almost burned too. When we got home from evacuation, some hens and my main rooster, Harvey, were hiding in the coop and wouldn't come out for 2 days. I had to go out and talk to them and tell them that they are now safe to get them out. Almost all of them went into a molt and lost all their feathers, it looked like a chicken slaughterhouse out there! I was only seeing 2 eggs a day for almost a month and a half. Now they are happy again and acting normally. So much better!

Have you tried fake eggs ceramic style but pretty tramanic event may have to ride it out

Maybe give them lots of warm food and extra stuff with calcium? Not sure. I've been giving mine leftover chicken and ground beef and veggies. When it's cold I give them their feed in warm water. I freshened up their dust bath, and started putting lights in their coop last night. visit them in the yard several times a day. I try to make sure they're happy.

I would give them all extra protein in the form of scrambled eggs and maybe a dose of yogurt as well. Molting chickens don't lay usually, so don't be upset about that. I would be sure to shore up your coop so those predators cannot get to any more of your flock. The stress on the others can keep them from laying. Use small hardware cloth to close up any gaps where those snakes are getting in as well. Vitamins in their water couldn't hurt at this point either. Be patient, chickens do lay eggs and they will begin again when molt and stress is over with!

Thanks. It's been really hard. We had our power restored yesterday after 2 months and one week without. Everything burned down but our home. We are lucky to have it. This was our barn. We are debating, rebuild or move away???? I'm for moving myself.

Soo sorry about your loss! But glad that you and they survived. I was in Vacaville after the fires, visiting my mom. My sister took me to see some of the desolation, many homes/property and lives lost.
I didn't know they'd molt like that from stress. Good to know!

Yes, I didn't know that shock and stress could cause a molt, but apparently it does! They are all coming out of it now, looking so pretty and finally laying for me again. It's nice to see them happy and normally "chickening" again!

Peafowl actually have a breeding season, it's not year round like chickens. The boys grow out their tails and dance for the ladies to hopefully be accepted by the hens to mate. All my birds are mixed together. The peafowl roost 60+ feet up in the trees, waaay higher than the chickens. I dont eat the peafowl eggs. Next season I may take them away from the hens (if I can find the nests which is fairly unlikely) to see if I can get them to lay more? I'm not sure how that works.

Our neighbors used to have peafowl. We don't have fences and they used to come quite far up the hill onto our property and lay an egg now and then! I never tried to eat one, as I had no idea how long it had laid there. It was always a single egg and it was just out on bare land, sitting in plain sight. I've never had peafowl, just guinea fowl so I don't know if this was normal. They have since moved away.
