I haven’t decided yet. I’m considering it though. We’re getting plenty of (fertile) eggs every day, and we’re still rebuilding the flock after losing a bunch over the summer.

I let my banty as one goes broody I will do it again

I had 2 other girls go broody this winter, the first is just coming out of it after hatching on thanksgiving, and the second has a 2 week old chick now. The marans isn’t being super diligent about sitting yet, she’s up for a couple of hours at a time, so I’ll give her a couple of days to make up her mind and go from there.

10 today, I set aside a couple to hatch in case the broody marans decides to commit.

And Gretel (19 month old Austra White) thinks she should be hatching plastic eggs! Again! Even if I DID have a roosted Feb in Vermont is NOT the time to be hatching chicks.

I pulled her out of the nest box twice during the day. Too cold to put her in the broody buster, the water would freeze. Waited until it was dark to close up the coop. Pulled her out and put her on the roost. Screaming at me of course. Sadly Vienna (Barred Rock) was in the other side of the box so I moved her as well. Gretel was sitting on 2 eggs, neither was hers, one was Vienna's.

Three. Still no egg from the new layer since the shell-less one the other day. I was so sure it was hers...

0 yesterday.

4 of 4, about every third day Ill get a 4 banger, fairly often two days in a row. I can tell who's not earning their keep and scold them with being last for a treat and the threat of either make me breakfast or BE my breakfast!!
