How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

4 eggs today! Yippee!:wee

Mei was having a tough time laying this morning, so I stuck around to keep an eye on her. When it finally happened, she jumped up on the roost bar, crowed like a rooster, and then dropped an egg right onto the coop floor from a 4ft height. It fell with a thunk, but luckily it didn’t crack. I had been wondering why her eggs were always half buried in shavings and right next to the door. What a goofball! :gig

3 out of 5 today! :) Also had a bonus of a drowned mouse in a water bucket! :sick
Mine chased a mouse to death...I had found it the day before, inside the coop hallway, loving a bale of straw, and chased her out when I swept the hall & moved the straw bale elsewhere. She really should not have been running around in their pen during the daylight hours...how did she even get into their pen? I chased her out the door, out to my yard. Well, she somehow squeezed into a pen & those mini dinosaurs made short work of her. Barely a mark on her, but there she lay, kinda exhausted "rough around the edges" worn out dead & now ignored by my crazy prehistoric minded flock. 🤪

They didn’t eat the mouse? Omg when mine catch one the chase is on until one of them can swallow it!

Nope, these were all 5 month old pullets & 2 young Roos & 1 old Roo...I was surprised, too. I thought surely someone would scarf it down. Maybe they just loved the chase, but weren't hungry, or feeling particularly greedy? 🤔

In another pen I found a dead rat, too.

Dead but not a mark on it...I flipped it over to see.

Those were mature hens & Roo. I guess rodent is not a desired delicacy on their menu? 😆Their tastebuds Spoiled by live mealworms?

(BTW, I see field mice often, being surrounded by 80 acres of farmland, it happens. This is only the 2nd rat I've actually even seen, since moving here 2005. There are 2 horse barns nearby, I know when there is livestock, there will always be critters & rodents nearby. I just hope the local cats, foxes & owls have a taste for rodent. Seeing a few Mice...yeah, no biggie. Seeing rats...omg No Pleeeez!!!)
