How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

Grr... we may have an egg eater. Yesterday and today I found empty shells. Our camera is over the nest boxes so we can only see part of them on camera and I couldn't see what happened to the eggs.

Ugh, that is super annoying to deal with. What I found help was frequent egg collecting, free access to oyster shells (they had thin shells), good quality food (we think ours were eating their eggs due to poor quality food), and rocks in the nesting boxes. Wishing you all the best and hopefully you can fix the issue soon!

Good info, thank you. They have free access to oyster shell, their egg shells are thick. We feed Scratch & Peck organic layer mash plus plants like wheatgrass that we grow for them since there are no plants to forage (desert), grubs, sprouted seeds, and various treats.

What's the reason for rocks in the nesting boxes? They have wooden eggs I hoped would deter pecking and eating.

I hope they aren't bored. They have plenty of space and a cluttered coop and even parrot toys.

The house next to ours is being remodeled. Their pens aren't close to it but I wonder if the noise is stressful to them? They seem unperturbed by things like fireworks and car alarms, though. They even sleep right through them.

4 eggs today, from Août, Helmikuu, Ebrel and Juin :)

Quite the whopper from our Août! She isn’t a big bird but she always lays enormous eggs.

We’ve had a game camera set up in our coop since the pullets began laying, so that we could know when their first eggs were laid (still waiting on little Marzo, our late bloomer). All the girls get filmed somewhere in the laying process, as it is triggered by movement and has a delay. All except Brelly, who almost never gets filmed in the nest box, though I find her eggs just where they should be. She’s either very sneaky or very quick!

2 for this morning. Have a sparrow hawk when I first saw my hens feathers near the fertlized egg nest (in my heart) it couldn't be my stray cats they not like that, to bother the birds. Afternoon went into the hay barn and out flew a sparrow hawk.. First time in 24 years to see the hawks this close it has to be the gatherings of the little wild birds that have shown up since I feed outside the barn. Shame to bother my hen on her nest. Looking at getting bird netting to lay over the barn opening to stop the sparrow hawk. Still love seeing the prey birds up close beautiful creatures. Horned owls, snow owls, red tail, sparrow hawks, and at one time an eagle would purch on the light pole, and my Ravens one named oliver and his girl friend. Sad thing is the stupid kids with their pellet guns killing them that I don't see the bigger birds like I use too. Breaks my heart...

sorry rambling lol... 2 eggs today lol
I know. It’s sometimes hard for me, to be a chicken owner who loves hawks (which eat our flock when they can). When they get really close, I shoot a BB gun near it (definitely not intending to kill it), to scare them away. But I always try gentler methods first: like hanging streamers and bright objects around the chicken run.
