11 yesterday!
7 this morning but they lay throughout the day
OMG yesterday evening I couldn't find Dorothy so I was wandering around the property calling her name -- all these goofy chickens follow me wherever I go, the sweet darlings, so I felt bad because I was walking all over and they were like, running to keep up. Gosh I love them
Anyway, Dorothy, steathily creeps out from the hedge when I was at the front door, getting my husband to come help on the search.
So I felt so bad for making them wander ALL over that I grabbed the last bit of scratch I had and we sat outside on our front porch and gave it to them for a treat.
It was a pleasant evening; my husband took this, sitting down with them - he made a small pile of scratch to get them to come nibble.
Anyway, not 15 minutes after this photo was taken, they moved all over across to the grass over there across the driveway.....
Chuck (our Cockerel) gives a warning call and they immediate scatter and not 1 second later, a cooper's hawk flies RIGHT THROUGH THEM, about 1-2 feet above ground. We witnessed the entire thing. It's only about half the size of these girls. I think he would have had a BAD time if he tried to grab any of them LOL
The girls know what to do, they are *excellent* at hiding
But Chuck? He stood his ground, facing off where the hawk flew to and stood there, just waiting. It was a sight to see. Gosh, we were proud of him.
My husband threw rocks in the direction of trees where the hawk landed -- not AT the hawk, we know the laws!! and it buggered off.
Such drama when you have chickens out and about haha
It would have been a different story had it been a red shouldered hawk, but so far so good. They are too happy free ranging for me to do it any different.
