How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

She would love that - she loves being brushed and fussed over. Yes she is an Arabian. Around here they are not popular, and I’m fact last year here there were not even a dozen registered by the Canadian registry. When Truly was born there were a couple thousand being registered a yr. But these days seems no one wants horses. Too expensive. Once my girls are gone (I also have a thoroughbred who is 24), I won’t have any others, everything is incredibly expensive now - hay, feed, bedding, Vet, farrier. All very expensive. Not to mention I am getting too old for risking getting injured.

The chooks are more my speed now 😉

I tell everyone the reason my eggs taste so great is because the chooks pick out the pieces of grain and such from the horses poop 🤭
I don't understand that prejudice against this amazing breed, but I faced it too. One of the ladies I rode with (long ago and far away), on seeing my half-bred, Crystal, actually SNEERED with curled lip and said, "Eeeww, I thought you said you had a HORSE." But we showed her when we ran away from her on her Appy and the others on their QH's, they all at a lung-aching gallop and Crystal at a smooth, mile-swallowing extended trot, lol. I had to keep circling her to let them catch up, then off we'd go again, leaving them in her dust. Honestly, it was like flying!

They are nifty horses, I did dressage, hunter/jumper. Did well also even against the big warm bloods.

Now I am too old to do all those things, a fall would not be good! These days the only thing risky I do is chase down the chooks as they try to escape - it’s great entertainment for the horses, they watch while I go round them up. It’s too funny!

5 eggs today, from all but Juin :)

Is it normal for a pullet who isn’t broody to feather her nest? Ebrel has removed all her belly feathers, but she lays an egg almost every day, only staying on the nest long enough to get the egg out and then she bolts. She screeches like a broody when she’s in the nest box too. None of my other girls have done this, and Welsummers I thought had pretty poor motherly instincts, or so rumor has it. I just find it so odd.

I learned yesterday that if I pick her up and lay her on her side in my lap, she’ll just stay there and fall asleep, I don’t even have to hold onto her. It’s the cutest thing, but that’s when I discovered that her belly was completely bare. What a silly girl!

My one Azur Blue did that last year, I thought she might go broody but she never did. I think their hormones just go wild when they are young and they have the urge to feather a nest, but then don’t commit.

That’s interesting! She’s laying a lot, so I’m sure her hormone levels must be pretty high. I hope she calms down as she ages and those hormones slow down. She seems pretty high strung at the moment. Thanks for your help! ❤️

🙄 DH says our two broody hens are still acting broody even though they have each hatched a chick. They are anchored down in a corner, side by side still, while their chickies explore the brooder, apparently unattended.
As long as the little chicks seem safe, go ahead and leave them. They knows if the eggs left are alive.
