I am in New England and have no heat or light in the coop. I haven't noticed any reduction in egg laying for the winter. Is this unusual? Many people told me that the hens would slow down or stop laying altogether without the light. But I've got 4 to 5 eggs a day from 7 hens since they started to lay this summer and it hasn't slowed at all. Just wondering if this is unusual?

What breed hens would those be? Don't know for sure, but 50% or so isn't unheard of for some breeds their first year. I give mine around 14 hours of light and get from 60-100% from them, but they are all first year layers. Last year my old hens were on their second winter and even with the light I was lucky to get 50%.

I don't use heat but give 12 hours of light; energy saver on timer from 5:30 am to 8 am then 3:30 pm to 5:30. I've excellent layer breeds with worst layer being Barred Rock. Get at worst 5 eggs in a day from 7 girls.
5 so far today and this week has been their best- 44 eggs from 7 girls. Likely to get another today too
Woohoo! Yup, got another. 6 for 7 today, 45 for week.
Since the Red Star finally settled in the poorest week has been 42 eggs for over a month.
So happy.
