So, despite being in the nest first thing, Yolanda did not lay... or at least I did not see any evidence of laying... So... I will need to make sure this is just some funky mini-molting (because she does look somewhat bedraggled) and not something more sinister... like egg eating.

Saffron and Kaylee were monopolizing the two nest boxes in the coop all afternoon... which just irritated Zoe to no end... She stood in the middle of the coop, facing Kaylee and Saffron and just hollered that egg song of hers at them continuously which got the whole flock in an uproar... I was out planting broccoli, brussels sprouts and onion sets today and at one point heard 4 of my seven girls singing that egg song... She eventually gave up waiting for a nest to open up and used the hanging basket I set up as an auxiliary out in the run (that my two Wyandottes use exclusively). That is what it is there for, but I think I might have to figure out how to add a third nest box in the coop for a total of 4 available nests to minimize the occurrence of the angry squawk-a-thon that happened today.

Take a small bucket or coffee can out with you. Or at the very least, put them in a jacket pocket.

I got 8/9. It seems my girls rotate with their day off. I have a mixed flock and pretty well know the color of each girl's egg so I can tell who did not lay. My BR is on a 3 day on, one day off schedule so sometimes she over laps one to the others and I only get seven, but even so we get plenty of eggs.

Gifa... "helicoptering" LOVE IT!! I'm starting to do that, too! :) I've yet to see an egg after this supposed egg song they do. I hear them, wait, and nothing EVER!!

Yesterday was a disappointing day egg wise. 2/10. UGH. They were doing so well w/ 6 and 7 a day. Today should be better.

Yeah, most of the time my girls are sneaky, and forgo the whole egg song thing... but yesterday they were all going... the two in the nest, the one waiting for a nest and another one out by the feeder who had laid an hour earlier... it's possible one of the wyandottes or maybe Yolanda was going too... but I will never know for sure... all I know is that I was sitting between rows of brussels sprouts and broccolis yesterday, putting onions in, and it just got crazy over there...

Ours must be sneaky, too. They come in from free ranging to lay in their boxes, which is nice. Although yesterday I was taking pics of the coop and one popped an egg out while outside the coop. Think it surprised her as much as it did me. I even got it in the pic I took. LOL Ooops. The squawk-a-thon had to be something to hear. Too funny. I love their personalities and never knew chickens really had them. They're teaching me new stuff everyday it seems.

I have had an instance where one of mine laid an egg, sang about it and another joined in.
On sings sometimes before, or way after.... :p
Yesterday was 2 of 3, Austra skipped....

Zoe, my leghorn has taken to using the egg song as a means to protest standing in line for a nest box... After that, I think the others just get caught up in the excitement.
