How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

Hey gang,

So I am facing wrist surgery in a couple of weeks a d will have very limited abilities for two months, with a 2lb weight restriction. So I am looking to streamline a few things for the flock to help make it easier on my boyfriend. So looking at waterers and dealing with that in below 0 temps. I am curious if anyone on here has experience with the horizontal nipples?

If so, how did they do I the freezing cold, did they freeze?

Did you use them with a bucket?

Did you get submersible heater for the bucket to keep from freezing? If so which brand did you use?

Right now I am leaning towards the horizontal nipples (as I have heard the nipples don't freeze like the vertical ones can), with a bucket system and a submersible heater/de-iced. Will set up three waterers possibly. Any feedback would've greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Check out The Chicken Fountain ad seen at the bottom of this BYC page. Under heaters, they have this:

Heater Accessory Kit

  • Item #: HAK

Our Heater Accessory Kit provides you with the items you will need to help keep your drippers on The Chicken Fountain

from freezing. Please note that this kit does not include the internal heater (API 250D) unit necessary to maintain the water temperature above freezing. This API 250D unit can be purchased in our shopping cart or on many other web sites.
Our solid copper rods are used to “grab” the heat of the water and transmit that heat to the tip of the drip heads. Because we use solid copper rods (not copper clad) the system can still accommodate additives such as ACV or other water soluble additives. The copper rods can stay in the system all year long and never have to be changed.

Included with the Heater Accessory Kit is our winter cap which allows you to route the electrical cord for the API 250D 200 watt heater (optional) out the top of your unit.

API 250D Internal 200 Watt heater

  • Item #: 98765

This API 250D heater will fit inside of any of The Chicken Fountain

systems. This unit comes with its own built in thermostat and run dry protection preventing overheating of the water. The unit has a 6 foot electrical coard that is protected with a stainless steel spring to prevent pecking and chewing. Additionally the stainless steel guard prevents hot spots inside the system. Please note that the heater alone will not prevent the drippers from freezing, our Heater Accessory Kit is needed in addition to the heater.

Simple instruction are included and normally take less then one minute per dripper to install with no tools. The rods can even be installed while the unit is set up and fully operational.

Thanks, yes I have seen this system and my understanding is that we can build one for a lot cheaper. Also it is my understanding that the vertical nipples can still freeze even with the heater. I have seen that you have to wrap the actual PVC piece that they nipples are attached to.i have read several threads on the horizontal nipples and they seem to be better suited for temps below 0.

I just switched to the covered large (7 gal?) bucket/horizontal nipple system. I am using the Farm Innovators 250W stock tank heater. Been down to 0F here and the bucket is completely ice free. That said, the bucket is under the coop INSIDE a barn protected from the wind except when the pop door is open (only a few hours/day lately!).

Thank you, that is exactly what I was looking for.so you haven't gotten below 0, what part of the country are you? Did you start older hens with the horizontal nipples and if so how did they do? I was reading that it takes them a minute to get it and to pull all other water sources when you do change over. I have read people say weeks old chicks pick it up within hours. What was your experience? 12/23 so far might get a couple more before 6:00.
