Yeah, I don't like the cold and snow either, but I've lived here all my life.
I have a good paying job that I like and I still have a few years before retirement.
But I so much want to move to a warmer climate. Hopefully my lottery numbers will come up soon and I'm so outta here.
Here's a pic of my girls around noon today
400
They are so happy I covered the hardware cloth with plastic to keep out the wind and snow. There's a 1/4 inch gap at the top all around for ventilation. So much better than the last big storm when they stayed in the coop to keep out of the wind. Now I toss scratch under the coop to keep them occupied till the storm is over and I can use the snowblower to clear the pen.
5/5 today. GC

Your a toughy. I wouldn't have chickens if I had to snowblow my way to them! It is going down to 19 tonight... so hubby and i discussed selling the house in the next year or two and moving possibly to Florida

He works outdoors all season and says his old bones cant take the extreme cold or heat anymore! Lol

6/6 today

Not much snow here in SW Ohio, maybe 1 inch at the most. The temps have been hard to take though after last Wed. & Thurs near 70F. In the teens at night the past few nights.

Stay warm & safe

Temp, 85F degrees all day and 75F at 4am I guess it is spring now . So how many still haven't changed all the clocks yet ?
You always seem to be doing something right when it comes to incubating eggs! It seems like you always have good results. I have 8 eggs that are due to hatch on the 18th. I have taken a "hands off" approach this time. I haven't even candled them!

Tomorrow I turn off the turner and then wait some more!

I think I have a Barred Rock that is broody in the main coop. I noticed she was in a nest box last night when I looked them up. I thought maybe she was laying a late egg. Then this morning when I went to let them out, I noticed that she was still in the nest box. So, then I thought she was "naughty" and had decided to sleep in the nest box. When I got home from work & went to collect eggs, she was still on the nest. That's when I began to get suspicious. She did get off to get some cracked corn, but was back in the nest box before too long. she only had 1 egg, so I added 3 more. We'll see if she is committed or not. If not, no big deal as I have over 5 dozen eggs sitting on my kitchen counter and have sold or given away 8 dozen in the past 3 or 4 days.

March 11 - 14 eggs
March 12 - 21 eggs
March 13 - 15 eggs

More hens/pullets have went broody.

I have eggs ready to hatch in the incubator & now have a barred rock that appears to have gone broody. I wonder how many others "will catch her disease"

Last time 1 went broody in that coop, I think 2 or 3 others "caught " the same broody germs.

Ok, now I'm intrigued. What's the recipe?

Almost forgot, 15 eggs today (including the 4 I left for the broody hen).

  1. In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine warm milk, yeast, sugar, salt, butter, and eggs. Add in flour. Using a dough hook, turn the mixer on to a low speed.
  2. Once the flour starts to incorporate into the dough, increase the speed to a medium range. Add more flour as necessary so that the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl. The dough mixture should be tacky, but not stick to your hands. It should be soft. Add more or less flour until the dough reaches the desired consistency. The amount of flour you add in bread making is always an approximation and you should go by feel.
  3. Transfer the dough to a lightly greased mixing bowl. Cover with a towel and let rise until double in size, about 1 hour.
  4. Lightly grease a baking sheet. Punch down the dough and roll into a 12inch by 18inch rectangle.
  5. Brush the dough with ½ cup melted butter. In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle on top of the melted butter. Roll up tightly lengthwise so you have one long roll. Use plain dental floss or a sharp knife to cut the dough into 12 one-inch slices.
  6. Place the slices onto a lightly 9x13 pan. Cover and let rise 30 to 45 minutes.
  7. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Bake the rolls for about 14 minutes, until just kissed with brown on top.
  8. While the cinnamon rolls are baking, make the cream cheese glaze by using a hand mixer to whip together cream cheese and butter in a bowl until light and fluffy. Whip in powdered sugar and vanilla extract. Add enough milk to achieve a drizzle-like consistency.
  9. Frost the rolls while still warm. Serve immediately or cool and store. Stays good for 4 to 5 days.
Notes
***Some have reported under cooked rolls. Cooking time is dependent on the size of your rolls and oven. You should cook the rolls until they have just a kiss of brown on the top. If they don't have a kiss of brown, they probably aren't done. Cooking time may be upwards of 18-20 minutes.
