OopsReturned to the farm today to discover 9/15 hens broody, each on a pile of eggs......... She said some of them have been sitting for over two weeks so we are close to having chicks.....a lot of them.![]()
Lots of peeps around here have eggs but I am hoping I can not step on my neighbours (who already has chickens and eggs) toes and find some people who would buy from me (I think I can) and yes if not can always find ways to use (thinking stocking the freezer with baked goods etc for the winter).I bet you have friends that would take the extra eggs. If you are lucky some of them might recognize the difference in quality from store bought factory farm eggs and will pay you for them.
Also tell him that the girls that are laying now likely won't lay next winter so you need some new ones now that will lay (hopefully) through their pullet winter.
Please keep us informed on that come winter. I've only had spring chicks. Not sure if a girl hatched in the fall will go through a "first full year fall" moult and maybe shut down on egg laying.I'm hoping they'll keep laying (most are good winter layers) as they have only started last week bless them (they were November babies).
Ahhhh I forgot about the autumn moult although have read about it - how long does that usually put them off laying? Will certainly let you know if they do or not! Please keep us informed on that come winter. I've only had spring chicks.
