How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

Returned to the farm today to discover 9/15 hens broody, each on a pile of eggs......... She said some of them have been sitting for over two weeks so we are close to having chicks.....a lot of them. :jumpy
Oops :lau:laulook forward to seeing what you end up with :lol:

Only 2/4 today (although again the silkie might lay later!).

I bet you have friends that would take the extra eggs. If you are lucky some of them might recognize the difference in quality from store bought factory farm eggs and will pay you for them.

Also tell him that the girls that are laying now likely won't lay next winter so you need some new ones now that will lay (hopefully) through their pullet winter.
Lots of peeps around here have eggs but I am hoping I can not step on my neighbours (who already has chickens and eggs) toes and find some people who would buy from me (I think I can) and yes if not can always find ways to use (thinking stocking the freezer with baked goods etc for the winter).

I'm hoping they'll keep laying (most are good winter layers) as they have only started last week bless them (they were November babies).

Please keep us informed on that come winter. I've only had spring chicks. Not sure if a girl hatched in the fall will go through a "first full year fall" moult and maybe shut down on egg laying.

Ahhhh I forgot about the autumn moult although have read about it - how long does that usually put them off laying? Will certainly let you know if they do or not!

Is that your experience so far? My girls were Spring chicks last year. The Welsummer quit laying for a couple months in late winter but everyone else kept going, just slowed down a bit. I'm curious to see what happens this year.

It was my experience with the 2012 and 2015 girls, they came in early June, started laying in Oct-Nov and all laid until their first adult moult the following fall. The girls from last April all started in the fall (per plan!) then shut down other than the Barnevelder (she started late). Then SHE bailed mid February when all the other hens were starting back up. She's been spotty since.

If the girls I get next week do the same thing this winter, I'm going back to June chicks!

Well I thought today would be a 0 day but went out to give them some discard old fruit and put them a new perch and found a huge light brown egg. This one is almost twice as big the past 3. It's at least as big as if not bigger than my duck eggs used to be. I'm guessing the Delaware unless it's a double yolker- would be my first ever double yolk egg if it is.
