How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

Hi guys!:frow I got back from visiting one of my sons. He lives in Birch Tree, Missouri and I got absolutely NO INTERNET or PHONE reception down there!!
I got 15 eggs today. ( I had a friend watching the chickens for me and told her she could keep all the eggs while we were gone, so these 15 were laid today.
I also found 2 new chicks in the incubator when we got home!! Now there are only 3 eggs left in the bator.
I was going to either give these 2 chicks to a hen sitting on a nest box ( she was broody a few weeks ago, but never hatched anything because we kept taking her eggs and then she switched to sitting on a bunch of eggs that I think were already doomed.) Anyway, when I got out there this evening with the 2 chicks, she was off the nest again. I guess I should have gone ahead and left the eggs in there until I brought the chicks out. So, guess who got the chicks? The Momma hen that already has 5 chicks of various ages. :lau The oldest chick is like 2+ weeks and the youngest (besides these 2) was given to her last Tuesday.
She sure does a great job accepting new chicks. She even watches me put them under her. I do wait until dark, but there is a night light and I do go in with a flashlight. But I'm happy I don't have to leave them in a brooder in the barn especially because the next few days it is suppose to only be in the 80's instead of the 90's. Plus we leave again in the morning. This time we are taking our 4 year old grandson to Branson. We plan to spend most of the time at Silver Dollar City. We will be back sometime on Monday.

I feel like a slacker because I haven't rated any coops for a couple of days.:lau

Woke up this morning with 24 chicks just hatched in the incubator, two more eggs to go. I’m thinking placing some of them under 2 broody hens tonight.
Yep am keeping all of them except the roos, which might be 50% of them. Unfortunately the 2 chicks I’ve place under the broody (#8) were pecked to death. It was horrifying to see healthy chicks get killed, there goes the plan to have the 3 broody raise them all.
Spartan22, I am so sorry to hear that your broody hen did not accept the 2 chicks!! I have another broody hen that hatched 2 chicks (finally!!), she kept killing several as they were hatching. I haven't tried to slip her any other chicks, as I am afraid she would not accept them. When I introduce a chick to a broody, I go out at dark with a flashlight. I either cover the flashlight so that it only lets out a tiny bit of light or I turn it off once I get myself in place. Then I slip the chick under the broody. I usually try to put it right under her. Sometimes I get pecked for my efforts. Then I turn the flashlight back on so it just barely lets me see what is going on.
If the broody is pecking at the chick, I take it back away, otherwise I leave it, but I go back out after a little while and check to see how things are going. If the chick isn't under the Broody I will take the chick back. However, if the chick is still tucked under the Momma and she seems calm and peaceful ( I don't try to see under her, I just make my observations from a far) I leave the chick there.
I have only had to retrieve one or 2 chicks.
You could try with another broody, however I would not recommend trying it with a first time broody.

I hope the rest of your chicks are doing fine!

end of the month I get to see if my Cockerel I like so much is shooting blanks
his broody hen is on 5 eggs due to hatch about the 27th
I seem to get 6 one day 11 the next today was 6

3/3 last 2 days! Wondering when Doris the Slightly Dim silkie will start up again as her chicks are now as big as her bless her :love:love

Oh I'm so sorry to hear that Spartan, that must be so sad.
All my French Black Copper Marans are feathered legged and lays pretty dark eggs.
So I had to go and look this up and this is what Wikipedia told me:
Though the original Marans could also be feather-legged birds, British breeders preferred the clean-legged version, and thus feather-legged Marans are now mainly found in France and the United States. The Australian Poultry Standard recognises both feather- and clean-legged.[4] The American Poultry Association only recognises feather-legged.
So far I've only seen the clean legged ones here and that is what I've got!

Thanks Karen, it’s our first time to slip in a day old chicks to any of our broody hens, for some reason this year we had 8, which of 3 I have never place any eggs under to hatch except the ceramic under them, 5 had been raising their babies they hatched.

I tucked in the two beautiful chicks under broody #8 at night in total darkness and by 6am when I checked them she already killed them. All our 8 broody hens are first time this year, I think it all depends on how old they are, my 3 year old RIR which hatched 2 chicks and adopted a couple 2 week old chicks after another broody abandoned them was by far my best mom hen. She will definitely my fave for next spring if she go broody again. For the mean time I have 22 beautiful Black Copper Marans and Pendesenca chicks in the brooder all doing great on their first week and 7 eggs in the Brinsea Mini II to hatch in over a week, what have I’ve done? I’ve turned into hatching addict LOL.
