Nope, but by 2-3 wks they show up their sex early. Ive noticed with few hatches I have, roo like attributes show up sooner than most chicks I have if they are roo.

So not white chests or lack there of

Kris, could you expand a bit on this please? I hadn't even bothered looking as I thought it was too early but have 2 Marans (one black one blue I think :hmm:p) that are now `5+2 weeks old so would love to check your ideas to see if I can work them out!

4/3 today :lau I only got 2 yesterday so obviously just missed the egg which was in a weird spot in the coop not in the nest box!

Sent. Ask questions as needed ;)
For example
  • the numbers next to each hen's name is the number of weeks and days old they were when they first laid.
  • Days is the number of days since their first egg
  • % of days is the percent of days they laid since their first egg so "during laying age lifetime". This usually looks really good their first year since they SHOULD lay through their first winter, then drops as they age due to fall moult, non winter laying (I don't add light) and age. I have a 6 year old EE that has a value just under 42% which is not bad for lifetime laying, she's never been a winter layer. My entire 2017 "flock" which is what is in the spreadsheet is barely close to that, they didn't lay through their first winter! My 2015 "flock" is still in the 50s to 60s %
To keep the spreadsheet updated I usually copy a block of empty lines ate the bottom of the date area when there are a few left and insert them. The dates are "previous cell + 1" so copying the latest date of the pasted section down to the next date will update all those below (I know, confusing) and put in each girl's egg weight on the days they lay. Everything else is automatic in the calculations after you update the range for "Days" so it starts with the date of first egg for each one.

The prominent combs and wattles shows up early on the FBCMs, they get pinkish to reddish, some shows up as early as the first week, which not a true gauge on sexing for my other breeds of chicks.

Now I’m no expert on this field but just my experience on my own flock, specific gene pool of my Marans and my 2 yr experience on hatching which by no way advance or expert level. Can you take close up photos of your Marans maybe I can give some hints?

I sure will do the photo's need to wait for evening or let it cool a few degrees took frozen water bottles to cool their water into all the coop did see a few eggs but left them alone
till later
