It isn't Ameraucana that have the lethal gene, it is the Araucana. The gene is linked to the ear tufts. 2 copies = death, 1 copy = ear tufts. I think that is one reason the people who developed the Ameraucana chose muffs over ear tufts.
Yes, I agree with you! I was thinking about it today at work and realized my mistake.
Then I thought maybe you thought they were one in the same since you were not sure why they would dilute the breed. But clearly that wasn't the case either. I've always thought that the Ameraucana is the same as the Easter Egger and therefore, not really a breed at all. But perhaps I am wrong about that as well.
I only got 8 eggs today.
Yep! EE is not a breed. Ameraucana is a breed. Very specific requirements. But they were originally bred from chickens that looked like the muffed and bearded blue or green laying birds we call EEs now."I've always thought that the Ameraucana is the same as the Easter Egger and therefore, not really a breed at all. The reason you are likely confused is that many hatcheries sell EEs under the names:
Ameraucana - real breed, they are liars. A couple of hatcheries sell them but generally only one color. Need to get the others from private breeders.
Araucana - real breed, they are liars. No hatchery sells them, only private breeders
Americana - nothing but a sleazy attempt to have people think they are Ameraucana.
I do not understand why they do this. EEs are one of the most popular birds, call them EEs and they will still sell.
So how do my 2 work - they don't have the ear tufts, does that make them not really Araucanas even thought they are if that makes sence? I can't remember how many I lost in the egg but guessing they had the lethal gene.the lethal gene, it is the Araucana. The gene is linked to the ear tufts. 2 copies = death, 1 copy = ear tufts.
