How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

:hit:hit:hit:hitfirst loss to predators today - a small crappy dog . His owner is a friend of our neighbours and she was lovely and came around with our neighbour and Edwina (my only Araucana hen :rant:hit) then we found Hermione the Warrior Silkie dead under a tree. She is lovely and is paying to replace them, she was in tears bless her and I was trying to explain that it was my choice to free range my flock as they are so happy and I know that I will have losses. She feels so bad as the dog is usually right by her and it was all so quick.

Not sure on my egg count, pretty good - maybe 9 or 10. Going to the 2 people I sold eggs to today to try to get back any blue ones I sold them and then will try to borrow an incubator or try to get my remaining silkie broody! Will shutting her in with some eggs get her going??

So sorry to hear about your loss! At least the neighbor's friend was honest about and didn't just leave and not tell anyone. Doesn't do anything to bring your hen back, but at least you know what happened. Has your silkie been broody before? If she has, then it may work. But, then again, it may not. I would leave her with a lot of uncollected eggs or fake eggs to see if she decides she needs to sit on them. You could always start the eggs in the incubator and then if one of your hens decides to go broody and is sticking with it, you could do the ole swapper-roo and trade with her and put the already started eggs under her ( or just do some of them if you aren't sure she will stick with it). Good luck!

I haven't found any jumbo cartons for a decent price. I did see some on Ebay, but when you look at the last pic, they have extra large stamped on the inside like they are pulling a fast one. I got some on Ebay that are extra large .36 apiece with labeling. Then I saw some cartons at Race Brothers unlabeled for .25 apiece but not jumbo. Does anyone have a good source for jumbo cartons?

Sorry, all of the ones I have gotten have been given to me by friends that know I raise chickens for eggs. I am positive that they purchased jumbo eggs at the store and then recycled the egg carton to me.

14 eggs today. No more chick deaths yesterday or today!! :wee
Not sure how my hatch will turn out. I noticed today that the fan is no longer blowing in the incubator when the heat comes on. The temps on the wire (where the eggs are lying) was only 90 :he I'm trying to up the temps a little bit at a time so that I don't accidentally cook them. Not sure if the low temp (90's) for possibly the whole day was low enough to kill the eggs in lockdown or not. I guess I'll find out this weekend. They were supposed to hatch this Friday. I wish I had a broody that I could have put the eggs under. :idunno
