How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

Tell me about it! Lol!

Here’s a pic from a few minutes ago. If you look closely you can see there are 5 hens in 3 boxes! Raven and Daisy came out after about 5 minutes leaving Cinders and Ginger alone in the boxes. Crystal is by herself. She’s higher upon the order.

Sicilia at the bottom left is deciding whether to take a chance and grab the open box. She’s pretty much at the bottom of the order.

Can you explain to me how the toenail Thing works? The hen lays the egg, the egg is still a little soft and another hen immediately comes in and steps on it or pecks it to move it? Or the fresh laid egg shell is hard but the toenail going into it makes a small hole that doesn’t crack or open the egg up?

As you can tell I have no knowledge or experience with this ... yet!
The shell has a small hole in it which I ASSUME was made by a hen stepping on it and a toenail puncturing it. I've had 4 so far, 2 didn't go through the membrane. One was a larger hole and the white had leaked out. The last one was through the membrane and the white was just oozing a bit. None were eaten by the hens and since I know they will all rush in if I toss a broken egg to them, the eggs are not being broken into on purpose.

Well, what’s this I see?!?
I have white Leghorns that have just started laying.

I also have Speckled Sussex, EE and a Production Blue that I was not expecting eggs from for another two weeks at least. Looks like one of my SS surprised me today.

The egg on the right is a store bought large egg for comparison to my little brown egg on the left.

I got an impossible 17 today. Impossible since 2 of the leghorns didn’t lay and I only have 18 hens.

I found an egg already laid first thing this morning in the run by a water pan. It looked like it had been rolled around quite a bit in sand as the shell was discolored. The run however is wood chips. Weird. And I don’t see how it could have been from yesterday and I missed it but I must have. Nothing else makes any sense. And this happens the day after I posted here that there’s no place to hide an egg in my run! My chickens are determined to make a liar out of me - lol!

So I’m going with 16 today and updating yesterday’s count to 15.

Your probably right in your count I was gone all day Son said he only got 4 so will go check for myself now then update this

Sicilia is beautiful. What breed is she? I'm pretty new to chickens so I'm not good at figuring out breeds. :idunno

She’s a Sicilian Buttercup. More of an ornamental chicken than a layer and not a meat bird unless you’re thinking appetizer- lol! She weights about a pound.

I bought her from a woman who bought her as a day old chick from a hatchery. Sicilia is just over a year old. She’s one of my husband’s favorites.

She lays small pointy eggs about 5 days a week.

There are Sicilian Buttercup clubs apparently. It’s kind of a rarer breed I think I read. We just have her cause she’s pretty and sweet.
