How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

Six today, we always get five or six a day, generally six once in a while 7. I also have 2 hens setting at the moment and two hens rearing chicks so they aren't currently laying. When all of them are laying I generally get right around 8 day. Well until these chicks are grown this fall and I am back to having more hens anyways.

I generally estimate about 52% to 55% of the number of chickens I have for the eggs I should get each day, anyone else have an observed calculation on how many eggs will be produced a day per number of hens in the flock? I know different birds lay different amounts of eggs and feed and housing also makes a difference, but I was curious what others have observed and calculate.

Pretty difficult since it depends a lot on the time of year. In March and through spring the girls pop them out. Now that it is hot, much less so.

4 today from 16 potential layers though I shouldn't count Yue (7 Y/O Ancona that hasn't been laying this year) and Anais who stuck with the 8 littles after "Mama" Angel kicked them to the curb, they will be 7 weeks old on Monday.

Luckily we don't get much of a "hot" period here. Todays high will be 75 F and tonight the low around 50 F, so the summer heat doesn't seem to affect our laying much if any. The winter it stays about the same as long as I have lights in the coups.

15 eggs today. One leghorn didn’t lay, Sicilia didn’t lay (she’s acting much better) and one unnamed brown eggs layer gets me to my 18 potential total. I’m happy. Verifies that the 3 in the nest this morning really were from yesterday.

Other neighbor was excited to be asked to watch the chickens next week! They are interested in getting chickens on the foreseeable future so this is an opportunity for them to see how it’s done on a daily basis. First neighbor was happy to be relieved of the job so good all around!

I’ve read that 50% lay rate is generally acceptable when things are running smoothly. I was way under that when I had flock stress, illness, etc. Now that things have settled down and I have a better idea what I’m doing my lay rate is generally 70-80%. I do expect that to go down as the heat cranks up even higher and as moulting hits this fall.
