Got our second this morning. Our RIR is the first of our six hens to start laying (all are 21 weeks). Hopefully the others will start laying soonHow egg-citing!!!! (Sorry, couldn't help myself.) How many so far, and do you know which girls are laying?
Oh I feel your annoyance, I have three broody, one of whom hatched her two eggs today. It was -6C today and snowing. Great time for her to have chicks (thankfully I have a heated feedroom for them), but they sure are cuteJust 1 today. Had to cage the Marans…she is broody AGAIN & it will be in the 20s in a few days.![]()
I have rule - no poopy feet in the nest boxes. They never listen to meSix lovely, CLEAN* eggs on Thanksgiving Day, one blue, one green, 4 different shades of brown. All 6 plus the previous 6 went home with my daughter after T-Day dinner. She'd used most of the eggs I gave her last week making desserts for our party, yummm!
*Despite my best efforts, some of the girls manage to have muddy feet when they arrive at the nest box after our many rainy days...even though they need to come through the covered, dry wood chipped run, up the ramp and into the coop over dry, clean pine shavings to reach the nests. Wipe your feet, ladies!
Sorry to hear this, was she older?I got 6 eggs from my 7 remaining girls today. Unfortunately one of my chickens died last night for some reason. She was acting totally fine yesterday evening when I put them in to roost.
Thanks. No, she was still a teenager, only 8 months old. I found a folded up softshell (empty) inside her, so I'm guessing it was because of the ruptured egg inside her body. Mine were bred to pop out so many eggs it's no wonder they'd have some reproductive issues. Unfortunately this one couldn't handle it.Sorry to hear this, was she older?
Animals like us can have heart troubles, strokes, etc.
Again really sorry to hear this.
