How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

3 today, Mei, Juin and Août.

Mei, my much beloved and beautiful Welsummer passed away today. It looks like she laid her egg, and then laid down in the leaves of her run to take a dust bath and died there. She was still warm when I found her. I’m devastated. She never even reached her namesake month of May, as she was hatched last June.

I’m grateful for her lovely presence in my life. I’m so glad I started keeping chickens, as I know the short nine months I had with her were well worth all the pain I now feel at her loss. What a treasure chickens can be. They make every day wonderful for me, and Mei was a sweetheart. Adorable, a gentle leader, and she gave excellent hugs. I’ll miss her, and think of her always.

Sad news, I am sorry you lost her!

She left you a beautiful farewell, do you have a rooster with your flock?

Thank you so much.

No, I don’t have a rooster. She had a lot of trouble laying, it would take all day and seemed very painful. I’m not sure if her offspring would have had the same luck, so it’s probably for the better that I can’t hatch her eggs. I saved some of her feathers, and buried her where I plan to plant a rose bush so that she can live on in a way. It should bloom annually in May, which would remind me of her.

16 so far, but it is still early....

Smilies are inadequate, but words aren't much better at conveying emotions.

I felt an emptiness when I lost Joel at 11 months. He was a good boy.
Thank you fuzzi, I really needed a hug :hugs

It’s so sad, she was so young. Joel too. It’s heartbreaking that their lives were so short.

My other girls are now working out the new pecking order, and Juillet is a bit of a tyrant. Mei kept her in line and stopped her from beating up on my Dominique. Not sure how things are going to play out now. I had to hang a curtain between them on the roost bar so that Juin didn’t get pushed off onto the floor last night.

You could blow out the insides and keep the egg shell.

:hugs I’m so sorry! I had a Welsummer named Coco who looked like Mei. She was also very sweet and died young. You give your chickens a great life!
