How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

10 yesterday!

Their water(s) have been freezing so we don't have heaters, its really not necessary here as the supah freezing weather is a freak of nature - anyway we just having to keep swapping it out.

There is a free running rivulet on my property though and they get a ton of water from that when they free range.

But our 2 Cockerels who are penned up don't, so hubby has to check on them often. What a pain in the patootie! Will be like this til Saturday here.
Now imagine if you will 5 or 6 months of that stuff. And people wonder why I hate winter! Having livestock in the winter is miserable.

I understand why some people spend their winters in the south and their summers in the north. It seems to be the best of both worlds although it would be a PITA transporting all of your livestock twice a year.

I prefer to live where the weather is great year round. Makes everything simpler. ☺️ Except for the earthquakes. ☹️

Do you put them in a bucket or something as you gather them?
Yes, I use a small bucket, but I have a couple of ladies who insist upon laying in a hidey-hole which I need to stretch and reach down into in order to get the eggs. Not an issue when I am not wearing mitts or gloves, but the eggs are awkward to pickup with mitts/gloves.

I already have both thumbs cracked and split from the cold, and one of my toes frost bite and getting over my cheeks yet again…. I am trying to protect myself from cold, but sometimes I just have to work with bare hands, putting on the horses blankets also hard with mitts, so off go the mitts/gloves… cutting strings on the hay bales…. Bedding stalls.

A couple broken eggs is a small price.

Meanwhile only 116 more days of hell freezing over 😊

You poor dear! I know how those naughty birds are, laying in those hard to reach corners! I put a five-gallon bucket back there and store my grit or oyster shell in it to block those corners. What are you putting on your hands to heal those cracks?

12 yesterday

Harriet did a weird thing - she was running around the hen house, frantic and skittish (she typically is not) and laid an egg in the corner, making a 'nest' in the bedding.

Was it because her 'favorite' nest was full? lolol There were available nests but not the ones she always lays in.
My six girls all vie for the same box, and even if I put a fake egg in the other boxes they won’t lay in any box but that one. If it’s occupied by someone they can’t bully out of the way, they will be frantic and pace while singing their egg song, and when they can’t wait any longer they’ll quickly climb into the box (sometimes on top of the other chicken), and will hang their backend off the side and lay in the sand. As long as they’re standing in the box when they lay they’re happy! 😅
