How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

8 eggs yesterday, I think, I have been so busy I haven't been counting properly, I have a new basket in the house and I just kinda put them in there as I gather throughout the day.

It can't have been only 8 though, because I typically get between 10-15 from 17 layers. Who knows!

1 more chick died yesterday. Away from the brooder plate, stretched out. Legs stretched out and neck stretched out. Of the 5 that are left, the 3 FBC Marans look super healthy and hale and big. The 1 Ayam Ketawa is looking like possibly failure to thrive, as it's wings are over it's body -- but from my first flock I've had that before and had them live. So time will tell there. The Vorwerk chick left (disappointed because I ordered 2 and 1 died, the one yesterday) looks alright. Somewhere between the Ayam Ketawa and the Marans.

At this point, as wild as it sounds, the Tractor Supply chicks I've bought have all been SUPER healthy. Every chick I've bought via the mail have been... a mixed bag.

That's just my anecdotal evidence.

We are going to be getting a bin:

To put in the ground of the brooder, fill it slightly less than the rest of the brooder with bedding (just an inch or so) and put the water IN THAT. Then, if it leaks, it leaks into this bin and not into the floor of the shed LOL

This costs me only $33 so I'm happy with that lol

Doing that today.
I use a bin like that with my chicks, I put the brooder plate against the bin wall as close to a ‘corner’ as possible so that it’s warm with out a draft.

All the chicks I have bought at the local feed store here (shipped up from Hoovers Hatchery) have all been great with no losses. Now who knows how many the store itself suffers. But mine have been splendid.

I have never had them shipped to me as we don’t have this up here. When the local feed store started getting them from Hoovers many of us were eggcited! It’s limited we’e we can get birds from. There just isn’t the market up here, not enough people to support large hatchery sellers.

Last April’s chickies (some of them)

oOHHHH they are so cute :)

My local TSC also is from Hoover's as well and I haven't had any issues with them, not Cocci, not *anything*

The stores that used to get them in - Peavey Mart - have recently closed and are no more. So these are the last of the chicks I can get from Hoovers now.

The only other hatchery here in Ontario only caters to meat and egg layers. Last year so many people asked about silkies that they now sell silkies. Not sure why people couldn’t get silkies - lots of them on Kijiji. I even managed to score a couple at Christmas for my silly broody silkie pullet who just wouldn’t be stopped.

Anywhoo just as well, I don’t need the temptation of more chicks 😆 I am way over what I originally wanted. Chicken math squared here!

12 today, but one fell off a fence post and the girls got it - first time they have eaten a raw egg and shell >< I hope they don't realize that delicious treat is easily at their beaks!! lolol

I did the bin today, and omg, perfect solution and I wish I would have thought of this sooner.

Sorry for the really crap out of focus photo, I was really busy today and just snapped this one to show y'all
