How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

Chamomile, my Leghorn cross, has started laying eggs again today, after a hiatus from being broody recently. She laid hers in a corner of the coop. I intend to build some nesting boxes for the coop, once I finish expanding it.


Cardamom and Cumin have laid their eggs this morning, which Broody Clover quickly claimed for her own! I quietly took them away from her while showing her a golf ball to put underneath her.

Coriander is yet to lay today, but likely will around midday. She was broody back in late February but has been laying eggs for the past week, in fact ever since Sunday when Clover went broody for the second time this year! (And the third in her lifetime.)

3 eggs yesterday.

My Japanese bantam - Agent J is broody and she is not having privacy to do it as the other 3 members of her flock stand in front of her, interrupted her and pecking on her to get out to play with them.

I have a sick hen that have impact, then sour crop, then back to impact, sour repeatedly for almost 3 weeks now.

Treatments are Epsom salt solution drink, massage her crop to the cows come home, it is almost cleared, but linger on still. She is now just have feather and skin covering her bone, so skinny!!!

I give her 4ml of nutrient drink a day, she prefers to eat dirt whenever she gets out of the sick base. This dirt eating only started these last few days.

She eats egg white and ignore egg york, eat little of her smashed feed, anything I give her she eats a bit of it only which is ok as she has stopped laying egg due to the birth control implant.

I rather do preventative than treat ill health. It is exhausting treating ill health.

12 today, but I dropped one and it cracked a little :O

One of the ISA Brown chicks had a poopy butt, dunked her rear in water and softened it gently until it was clear, hopefully that's the end of it.


It was a warm day so we just wiped her off and put her back in the brooder, and she was toot tootin around and dried off quickly. Seems no worse for wear.

Our girl Penelope, Cream Legbar, her hip was always weak but now since Chuck has taken his way with her many times (and indeed, she seems to like it just fine, her ruffle after is always a tell) her hip is so bad she cannot jump up to the roosts on her own, she can't even jump up to the ramp OR walk up the ramp. She can run/walk around on ground just fine. Poor thing.

So tonight, I was probably 5 minutes later than usual going out to lock them up and she was waiting for me at the door! My heart!

I will carry her up to the roost as long as she wants and lasts <3

3 eggs today, from Marzo, Helmi and Brelly.

Marzo’s crop hadn’t emptied overnight and felt firm, and she was making jerky motions with her neck, trying to clear it. I believe it was impacted, but not too bad. I gave her some coconut oil (which she loved) and massaged it several times in an upwards motion. It cleared out most of the way, and she’s acting totally normal, but I still feel like it’s not completely fixed. I’ll keep an eye on her and treat again tomorrow if her crop isn’t totally empty in the morning.

Big storms are coming overnight and tomorrow. Hope everyone in their path stays safe!

A perfect dozen that I know were laid today plus an extra 5 (2 cracked) from a hidden nest in the garage... It's that one EE who hid eggs twice before. She is so persistent on not laying where all the others lay and I've no idea why! Now I have a feeling the bantam EE is also hiding her eggs. She laid a few after the winter break but has since stopped again. Suspicions.

Even 40 odd - it’s all the same really. You have to feed water and clean anyways! So go for it - it’s not like they are horses! Chooks are far easier and less expensive and dangerous than horses

Same storms heading here too, rain and lots of it, the system is picking up a crap load of moisture from The Gulf of Mexico and yep you guessed dumping it here on top of all the snow we still have. Flood warnings and snow load warnings for roofs are out, should be busy at work next week - oh yay…..

But, at least it’s not -30 and the chooks are happy to be getting out a bit during the day. Now if I can get them to slow up with egg laying!

Got 20 eggs tonight, 24 yesterday I think…. Thankfully I sold most all my eggs this week. Make room for more haha.
