I rescued 10 Amish battery hens six days ago, and they have been giving me 6 eggs daily since they arrived. They are really getting friendly, too--they love to peck at my wedding ring (well, as much as they can with their poor clipped beaks) and today I wore flip flops into the hen house, and they were fascinated by my painted toenails.
They really are endearing little girls, and I hope that eventually they will be able to free range--though I don't think they will ever be all that effective at pecking at things, but at least they are getting out to see a bit of the world.
If they are averaging six out of ten six days after a traumatic move, do you think this rate might go up a bit at some point? They lay wonderful, big brown eggs, so I'm happy at 60% if that's all I can expect.
