yesterday 11/12 AGAIN! YAY three days in a row.

9 today, but I let them out early because they weren't let out yesterday because we were gone.

3 out of 3 today and feel very lucky. They seem to be laying in a 3 -3 -2 -3 -3 -2 pattern for now.

Next spring - more chickens!

A few weeks ago I bought 3 hens and one rooster...It seems as only one hen is laying...We knew that one wasn't quite old enough yet...anyway...3 hens, and one egg most days...Kind of sucks if we're being totally honest. There are 2 white hens and a brown one. The brown one is every bit as large as the white one that is laying, but has no comb, just a little ridge...anyway she still hasn't even been in the nest box, and then one of the white hens is just huge, and I think she is too old to lay...so...Here I sit spending a week to get enough eggs for an omelet...
I did acquisition a little brown hen and 7 baby chicks...The chicks are strange though...they are fully feathered, but still peep and are small. Anyway the chicks are in groups of 2. 2 are brown and light brown checkered, 2 are white, 2 are checkered black and white, and one is gray...They had 8 originally, but the lady I got them from only had 7 when we showed up...I wonder if the missing one is gray...
Anyway, They look like pigeons and it will probably be another 3 or 4 months or better before they start laying...But if they are anything like the big brown pullet we got, then they might never lay...Lol. Kind of sucks though. I was looking forward to the eggs. The one egg I get for 3 days in a row is delicious though. Sort of a pink color and super tasty...if only there were a way to squeeze chickens.

Out of curiosity, how old is old? And what breed(s)? Since I am new to chickens, I am trying to figure out the "if you want a continuous supply of eggs, expect them to lay from the age of (in my case 22+ weeks) to xx years" "time to order more chicks" plan. I do understand they taper off as they age, though I don't know what age that would be. It might be somewhat determined by breed but I don't know.

My hens are about 4 years old now. I have a number of breeds: Black Australorp, Golden Sex-link, EE, Light Brahamas, Silver Lace Wyondott (sp?), and a blue somethng?? They were laying about 8 eggs a day. Then on Nov. 1st I moved them to their winter coop in my garden and they quit laying. Don't know if the move set them off or if it was just the days getting shorter. I would put a light in the coop but I am thinking maybe they need the rest.

One from my 23-week old Australorp - we have had one each day from her since Sunday when she started. On the small side, but perfectly usable and being my first ever eggs, the best tasting in the world!

First day, she laid right in the nesting box next to a dummy egg.

Second day off the roost - and broken

Third day - off the roost and not broken as I had placed straw under the roost.

Fourth day (today) - in a different nesting box.

Yay!!! She's getting it!

The other three girls are singing and looking around the nesting boxes with her when I clean out the coop - up till now, they stay in the run whilst I do my chores. I'm hoping they're getting ready to follow her example!

I had put a plastic egg in the nesting box so they'd know where to lay. After they laid in that box, I moved it to another box, in case two wanted to lay at the same time. They will only lay where the purple egg is. Found it and three eggs this morning. I moved it to the third, middle box, which was never used, just to see if they'll lay in there, too. Very interesting to observe their behaviors!

Also had to laugh. I cleaned out the nesting boxes and put fresh shavings and straw. One of the girls had to go in and check it out when I was done. She got up in, looked around, went to the other, gave it a once over, and went back out with the rest of the flock.
