How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

When all the stores close we can eat duck eggs every other day. I am going to get twice the normal amount of feed tomorrow. People are going crazy in the stores.

I generally try to keep a 2-3 months supply of animal food on hand because if there ever is a disaster, fema isn’t bringing dog food. I only have about a month and a half of chicken/duck food right now because I am still trying to get a handle on how much they actually eat. I keep increasing and decreasing my chicken flock. The ducks also seem to fluctuate on how much they eat

I went to the feed store yesterday they had a good supply if things get to looking bad I’ll get more feed. One nice thing our birds and dogs can pretty much eat what we do if there was a shortage.

I believe that for the most part waterfowl lay in spring only, but domesticated ducks may be different, especially in a year-round warm climate with fairly uniform day lengths. Here where I live, even ducks, geese and turkeys old enough to lay will hold off for the lengthening days of spring.

I also think age has some influence. My older duck didn’t lay until February but my others (4 brand new layers and a former broody mama) started laying in winter because they were young and full of eggs. We don’t get as cold as you thought, but I do think we have the short days in common.

Oh my gosh, right? So gross. My one dog has food allergies (including chicken and turkey ) and an inflammatory bowel condition, so we have to be careful about what she eat. She does best with fish and lamb and no grain except rice... sigh. But it’s made her a picky monster.

Thankfully no problems like that out of my 4 they must have cast iron tummies. They eat Salmon an pea from Sams club my birds love it too!

How much daylight are you getting and how old? My first set of Runners hatched in late April 2016 they were breeding and laying 4.5 months later and laid straight for 18 months my last set that hatched April 2019 didn’t start laying until Feb of this year. I was really surprised since their parents started so young.

I'm not sure on the age, either 1 or 2 (auction birds) atleast 14 hrs of sun aday, slightly more. The ones I hatched in September have been laying since christmas, but these older ones haven't yet. Guess they are still settling and may hold out till spring

Yes, you all have that nice trade wind. We get continental weather (not sure that's the right word, but you'll understand I'm sure) and in my case, mile high weather too. very short season for us. We put up a double-wall (but unheated) greenhouse last fall. So far all it's housed is hens, but if the snow ever stops, I'm putting them in the tractors and getting some other food into the greenhouse.
