How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

It depends: With less than 10 hours of daylight, ducks usually stop laying eggs unless they are being fed a more protein rich diet. My ducks get some cat-food treats every morning and evening and they only have slowed down, laying an egg every 2-3 days.

Okay, thank you! We feed them a flock feeder and I mix in some scratch as a combo and I give them a little brewers yeast mixed in to help with niacin, plus veggies and peas, so it's not a protein rich diet. I don't mind not having the eggs over winter, I just want to make sure the girls are healthy! Should I give them some layer pellets to help them out?

🤔 I might have to make my own then, bc store bought eggnog smells like a batch of chemicals to me.
Awesome!
Six eggs, one cup of spiced rum, one tablespoon arrowroot starch, one cup of palm sugar and one quart of heavy cream.
Get the best cream that you can. Always avoid cream that has the artificial gums added; they attack your gut lining.
I'll post the directions later. 😁
Oh, don't forget the fresh ground nutmeg. The plastic based grinders work just fine; I have both types, but the metal ones have really gotten expensive.

Duck need more protein than chickens! Way more protein.
Their pellets should have at least 18% protein or they need an additional supply. If you (semi) free-range them, they will find their own protein source in form of insects, spiders, lizards, amphibians and even young snakes and mice during the warm season. Duck are the real carnivores of the backyard poultry world!
Layer pellets usually only offer additional calcium, which can also be offered in the form of crushed Oyster shells. Oh, and peas contain ~5% protein:

But peas are way too expensive to feed to your ducks! - That's why i feed them cat-food. And its fun: You hold a hand full of cat food to the ducks and they eat it right out of your hand:

I have 6 runners and I haven't gotten any eggs for the last months, any idea why not?
They are taking a break over winter, which is pretty normal for ducks.
You can trigger egg-laying with additional artificial light and by feeding additional protein, like cat-food.

Nine eggs, all buried deep in straw and duck-poop.

You know that you need to clean out the duck-house, when you hit your head on a roof-beam… 😣 The "straw" is almost two feet thick in the main bedroom. But i don't want to put in fresh bedding as long as we have frosty nights. Decomposing poop and straw makes it warm and cozy…
