I had no idea people bred emus in different country's (I'm from Western Australia )

it's so funny, iv never thought of them as pets.. they are super cute though :)
I love the picture of the four emus with the two goats - so strange haha

Can i own a Emu in NY with out a permit? We have been looking into raising them aswell.
Emu are considered to be livestock by the USDA... Your best bet would be to contact your local department of agriculture as well as checking into any town/city ordinances. Between the two, they should know if there are any restrictions on keeping livestock where you live

I know in Highland NY the village of Highland is not alowed chickens cause their livestock animals..i dont live in the village..i live on the out skirts of town..not many neighbors..and everyone around here has chickens, ducks and goats..my property boarders a 300 acre hunting preserve and old apple orchards that are over grown..could my land possible be agriculteral? Sorry im a horrible speller lol

You would need to check and see how you are zoned then.. but it sounds to me like you should be ok for raising emu.. it's always best to double check though so you don't want to end up getting them and then find out later that they are prohibited.

I know for certain that the USDA considers them to be LIVESTOCK and NOT exotics since I double checked everything before we even bought the property where we are living now. At one time the previous owners here were commercially raising emus for meat.. but that was a while ago (before the bottom dropped out of the market) and I wanted to double check to make sure we were legal.
