How many hens could fit comfortably in this coop and run?

From what I've read, measurement 4sqft for coop & 10sqft for run per bird (LF) but then more space the better for happier chickens. Free ranging is good too. Enjoy!

The people who sold it probably suggested 4 to 6 birds? Most coop builders either make up this number, or else are using some high density industry standards not suited for backyard flocks.

As I see it, outside of the nest boxes, you have about 2 SF internal space in the coop. So maybe 4 birds could roost inside if they would roost inside. They may prefer to stay outside most of the time if they could. They probably would if you extended the roof line to cover the run and gave them an outside roost to use.

But it should work OK for 2 birds.

Looking at the measurements for both coop and run space that enclosure is made for 1 bird (and with chickens being flock animals, that makes no sense). You can probably get away with 2 in there, definitely not more, though if possible you'll want to expand the run space to compensate for the overall size. It could be something as simple as a dog pen attached to the exit of the run area.

I plan on free ranging for a good portion of the day and only keeping them in the run from aroind 6 pm til the morning. If theyre out for that long do you think its too small still?

If you can free range daily for more than a couple hours, that will help a lot - I wasn't sure if that was an option. I assume the roost bar goes completely across width wise so at least there is enough roost space for 2 birds to sleep, which is a plus.

You know, worst case scenario, it should hold up for at least a couple of years. If space really does seem to be an issue (or if you decide you want more birds) you can get a bigger unit down the line and use this for brooding chicks or integrating new birds.
