I would have loved to go with her to get them!!! I would have said lets get a variety pack!!!And we could hand pick all of our favorites..........Oh I can't choose....lets get em all!!! What a ride home!!!!
Basement brooder? Wow! I guess deep litter method already?
I guess if you were cold you could go down to the basement and snuggle with your new "chick blanket"!! LOL
Ok it's late and I am rambling!!!

Post picts.!!!

I don't even want to imagine what that basement smells like!

And yes to have 400/acre you need to do pastured pens, rotate and reseed, we looked into it a bit back as plan B or C. Out here you can swing a profit, but only because the weather allows year-round pasture, so feed costs are cut drastically. but no shot in heck I'd just show up with 2,000 animals and smile at hubby like poopageddon wasn't happening beneth our house.

My god someone stop this woman! LOL That would never fly in the "normal" marriage which this obviously is not. There are certain unwritten ground rules of a marriage IMHO. One that you discuss major purchases and ventures.

I would be furious with my DH is he did something like that and he would be furious with me if it were reversed. Personally, I see it as a lack of respect for your partner.

But, if he allows it...let him be the fool that pays for it.

Update on the 2000 birds....

The woman had a farmer friend come over and spend the day sexing the chicks. Turns out that from the 1500 chicks she bought....27 are hens!!! Well, now she is going to have to get rid of all the Roos all 1473 of them.
What's the chances on that? I think I would be slightly p'od if I only got 27 hens out of the deal. The farmer who helped her knows a man who will probably buy some of the roos from her. I feel bad for her in a strange sort of way.

Oh to answer someones question - my hubby and her hubby are plumbers

I almost want to say NO WAY!!!

There HAS to be more hens than that!!! What happened to the (unwritten rule of thumb)50/50 ratio?? I mean chances of the 50/50 ratio??? I'm glad I'm not in her shoes. I feel for the lady and all but........ If I had plans to buy that many chicks for egg selling, I would have bought pullets. I thought my 50+ were too many!! I'm actually introducing a few roos to the chopping block today. I hope she is able to rehome them.
I wonder what method the farmer used to sex the chicks? Vent sexing?

I'd be willing to bet there are more pullets in there.

Too many is when you can't keep up with the poo, the feed bill, etc... I would not want to be near that basement in a week, maybe even a day!

God, me either. I can't even imagine the reek down there. Also, how much air circulation can a basement possibly have?
