How many is too many??

My rule of thumb has always been that if you have to wonder whether you or another has "too many" - then that is very likely the case.

I'm not sure of the sexing method that was used...I'll have hubby ask on Monday. I feel for her too. She had apparently gotten her barn all ready for the chicks and now she has to get rid of the roos

I thought that the roo to hen ratio in her case was extremely crazy too! What are the chances that out of 1500 chicks, only 27 are hens!!! Wow is all I can say...I'm still boggled by the 2000 birds as it is.....lol

I would like to think she has a walk-out basement. That would be more logical. I cant imagine going up and down steps to do the chores. And as mentioned, ventilation. That famer HAD to make a mistake. Where did she get these chicks? I'll go back and check the OP.
Question: if you were to buy straight run from a hatchery-----you are going to end up with A LOT more roos than hens, wont you??
My mind says that they sex them-pullets go in one chute---roos go in anothere chute. When they send out shipments to feed stores they are going to send all the roos and maybe a hen or two??
Is that whaat they do?

I couldn't say for sure Henry but in todays world I wouldn't argue against you as far as the sex ratio. If you buy Hens or Roosters specifically, you are going to pay more for Hens. Economics suggest you are going to receive more Roos.

My follies began from a drop off situation. Nephew bought a "lot" of chickens at auction and they were "ALL" Roosters.

I am going to show this post to my husband. I just asked him today "Do you think going from 4 laying hens to 6 would be a good idea?" and he said "Six chickens is too many."

I keep getting flac from mine about our thirty - I started out with just 8, then added 4 more, then 7 more and then recently brought home 11. I sometimes read him posts from this forum, and we have a chuckle together. IDK about this one though he might think this site is giving me ideas, lol!

Mrs. AK-Bird-Brain :

I'd be willing to bet there are more pullets in there.

Too many is when you can't keep up with the poo, the feed bill, etc... I would not want to be near that basement in a week, maybe even a day!

I'm about an hour away from there and I think I can already start to smell something... oh wait... thats my three cornishes.

If she wasn't crazy before, she probably is now after having wasted $1,973 on roosters! I sure hope they're meaty!
