How many of us own our own business?

I'm sure glad I didn't have coffee in my mouth when I read this. LOL

My husband and I run a tractor repair business with one employee. He does the outside work, I do the accounting. We also farm a few acres of corn, oats and alfalfa. My FIL started this business over 40 years ago and historically the economy has never bothered it very much, it's always been pretty steady. But this last year has had some sharp up's and down's. We're getting more customer's needing longer to pay their bill's, most of them are dairymen struggling to stay afloat. Hoping things level out here pretty soon.

What would he charge me for a phone consult? or an email consult? i've got a '53 ford that crapped out and haven't had time to mess with it yet....i actually bought a new tractor because they had 0% interest (and it had the fancy hydraulic drive) but i want to tackle this thing over the winter if i can find some time.

Good thread. DH has owned his own window tinting business for 11 years. I help him tint occasionally, when his assistant is working his other job. Workflow is rather seasonal, so right now pennies are pinched. We're quite frugal with almost everything; we're used to cinching the belt tighter.
I would love to start something here at home for myself, maybe garden/farm related, more of a hobby that can supplement the income.

Gaa...speaking of bad customer service, I tried to update our account information with a company we work with. We've switched banks and I needed to update which card she charged when we ordered something.

Three hours of frustration later, I closed my account and went to her competitor. I'd prefer to stay local, but dang...come on, my primary reason for preferring small local companies was the better knowledge and customer service. Take those away, and why the heck am I paying higher prices for the same stuff I can get elsewhere?

Would you guys touch a golf cart or is that outside your scope? My great aunt has one she uses to get around and it's cranky. She's in Modesto.

Nevermind, misread where you were. 250 miles is a bit much for that repair.

LOL, I have no idea but I'll run it by him. Restoring old tractors and antique tractors also happens to be a hobby of his and my older boy.

Not sure that I count in this post, but......... We owned our own Plumbing Company for 10 years. All but 1 year was great, never worried about money and then on the 9th year

Economy killed us. Had we stayed in the repair end of the business we would still be in business, but we elected to let that part go and stay with New Construction only, boy was that a major mistake. But, after 25 years of Plumbing, my husband said he was done with it and wanted something different. So, now he is a Certified Allison Transmission Tech, DOT inspector and getting certified to run all the VIS equipment. Were poor now, but happy
